#SustainableCurator

What is #SustainableCurator?

When you see this hashtag, it means that the curator behind the coverage has received an optional small financial donation from the artist featured in the coverage. This is not payola*. It did not sway the judgement of the curator, and the artist could have received coverage for free if they’d wished.

*Payola is defined as a lump sum or bribe paid by an artist to secure radio play or other forms of promotion. This is paid directly in exchange for the coverage, and without that exchange of money, no form of coverage would have been given. Musosoup does not support payola and it has no place in the ethical promotion of music.

The transparent movement for sustainable music curators

Musosoup started the #SustainableCurator movement in 2021, to help make grassroots music journalism sustainable which, in turn, helps to make the creation of new music sustainable, too.

We’ve built our platform on the basic concept that good curators should be able to earn a living from music journalism and artists should be able to get exposure at a fair price.

With Musosoup, artists are not obliged to pay curators for exposure (there’s always a free option available) and any payments that are made do not sway the judgement of the curator, because the Musosoup platform is designed to encourage curators to only approach artists they like.

Musosoup isn’t just another music submission and curation platform; it’s a self-supporting, sustainable ecosystem designed to allow new music to flourish

Welcome to a more affordable era of music PR

With Musosoup, Instead of an artist’s payment going to a PR agent (which could be anything from £500 – £2000+), they instead pay a £36 campaign fee to get their submission in front of hundreds of our curators around the world. £7.50 of their campaign fee goes directly to our curators, with the rest being used to maintain and grow the Musosoup platform.

Artists can optionally distribute the remainder of their release’s budget to curators who want to generate promotional coverage. It’s a win-win for everyone.

It’s important to note that we fully believe that music PR does still have a place within the industry, but we’re fully aware that not all artists can afford it. It’s also worth noting that many music PR agents already use Musosoup to get coverage for their artists.

Musosoup isn’t just another music submission and curation platform; it’s a self-supporting, sustainable ecosystem designed to allow new music to flourish.

Talent should be able to break through no matter an artist’s budget and the #SustainableCurator movement will help make that the reality.
